When to Harvest
Pecan nuts usually ripen from April to July, depending on the area. As soon as the nut is physiologically ripe, the green husk goes dry, it cracks open and the nut drops out.
In South Africa the nuts are mainly collected from under the trees manually.
For various reasons, a certain percentage do not drop from the trees. These nuts are called stickers and are shaken from the trees. If a large number of the nuts are stickers, it may be due to poorly filled nuts, scab or other factors such as irrigation or fertilization.
